A Ritual for Marking Sacred Space

Breakout Sessions

(10:00 – 11:30 am)

Session A: The Ritual Lab – Tools for Intentional, Meaningful, Transformational Work – FULL
Facilitator: Ezra Bookman, Artistic Director of Lab/Shul New York City

Our work lives are filled with bland and ineffective rituals, from weekly staff meetings to welcoming new employees to galas and graduations. By intentionally crafting these moments, both big and small, leaders can build cultures of wellbeing, teams can grow shared purpose, individuals can resist burnout, and organizations can thrive. Join Ezra Bookman, Artistic Director of Lab/Shul and Founder of Ritualist, for a backstage look at the art of ritual and a design sprint to create your own new ritual addressing a challenge or issue at work.

Session B: A Better Way to Come Up with Killer Ideas without Killing Ideas – FULL
: Claire Tesh, Principal/Founder LMNO Educational Consulting and Clarity Creative Design

Team members at any level of any type of organization, can relate with having an idea shot down on the spot – either their idea was already tried, the organization doesn’t have the bandwidth or budget, or the organization is in the habit of doing things the way they have been done. Preconceived notions, patterns of behavior and basic fear have tied our hands both literally and figuratively when it comes to thinking in creative and innovative ways.

You’ll have the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone in a safe, playful environment and will better understand how to implement design thinking to create sacred space and time to cultivate and nurture ideas that would have otherwise “died on arrival.”

Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of design thinking and how it may be adapted into their daily lives both personal and professional
  • Put into practice empathy in decision making and feel more comfortable thinking outside of the box
  • Use tools of visualization in their ideation (visual timelines, mind-mapping, interconnectivity)

Session C: Attuning Leadership: Musical Techniques for Organizational Development
Facilitators: Cantor Melanie Blatt, Beth El Congregation | Daniel Langenthal, Director of the Leadership Development Institute, CJP Boston

Cantor Melanie Blatt and Daniel Langenthal will introduce you to a series of musical techniques that can be used to address challenging issues that commonly arise in organizations. These activities can help leaders address/facilitate issues in organizational settings such as at staff, board, committee and community-wide meetings. The issues include leadership, encouraging people to step out of their comfort zones, how to engage with different perspectives in a group, processing styles, holding space with confidence, active listening and more.

Session D: Finding Your Rhythm – Drumming Your Way to Teamwork
Facilitator: Changa Onyango, SignalFire Facilitator and Mediator

Discover the interplay of drum sounds and rhythm parts as a metaphor for facing the challenges inherent in group movement. Group work is about listening, accountability, and connecting to each other. What’s the difference between music and noise? How do complexity and diversity add to the richness of life? How does the absence of diversity lead to adversity? Explore these ideas and more with Changa Onyango, mediator and rapper.

Culminating Project: Art Brings It All Together

(11:45 am – 12:45 pm)
Facilitator: Julie Wohl, Artist and Family Engagement Specialist – CJE

During this concluding session participants will work with local artist and CJE educator Julie Wohl to create small works of art that tie in the learning, ideas and experiences from our day. These pieces will then be combined together to create a large-scale piece of communal art to be shared with our Community. All participants will be gifted with a small copy of the final piece upon its completion.
